Common Name:  Hyophorbe lagenicaulis x vershaffeltii (Silver Lady Palm or Bindle Palm)

History:  These have been distributed out of Hawaii for the past 15 years or so. They could be from manually cross-pollinated palms in Thailand or Hawaii or maybe grown from F2 seed.

Benefits:  This hybrid essentially looks like a more robust H. vershaffeltii that is also slightly faster growing. It will also do better in most Mediterranean climates whereas pure H. vershaffeltii can tend to get nutrient deficiencies including yellowing and spotting due to cool and dry weather. It thrives in South Florida, growing much faster and more vigorously than pure H. vershaffeltii.

Identification:  Seedlings are difficult to identify has hybrids until they have a few leaves or more. Hybrids can be identified by their relative fast growth compared to either pure parent. Once older, this hybrid looks like a H. vershaffeltii only with a thicker crown shaft which contains some silver glaucous coating.
