From flower to sellable palm- A hybrid's journey
Share
Unlike traditional plant nurseries who purchase seed online or grow palms from seed collected from their own trees, our hybrid palm trees are created through manual cross-pollination and selective breeding, often 18-20 feet high on a ladder. Even a small batch of seedlings represents several hours of meticulous work based on strict protocols and this is reflected in the price.
For example:
- 10-15 years for an average palm to begin flowering
- 5,000-10,000 total flowers produced per inflorescence
- 2,500-5,000 pistillate (female) flowers are cross-pollinated by hand
- 50-200 flowers develop into fruits
- 20-80 of the fruits will contain viable seeds with the rest
being parthenocarpic (non-viable; no seed). - 15-60 of these seeds germinate into seedlings.
- 9-40 of the seedlings are selected for sale based on color and vigor, the rest are discarded
The entire process from flower to sellable plant is
about 2 years.
