Description: Golden Cane Palm (Dypsis lutescens) x Triangle Palm (Dypsis decaryi)
The name ‘Golden Triangle’ alludes to the golden petioles and tristichous (in a triangular shape) leaf arrangement. This hybrid was first released by us around 2015 to collectors mostly in Southern California. We are happy to now offer it again as it is THE FASTEST HYBRID we produce here at Seabreeze! One of our most robust specimens went from sown seed to a tall 1 gallon plant in just 10 months! To create this hybrid, we apply the pollen from a Triangle Palm (C. decaryi: a palm native to dry lowland forests in Madagascar), to the female flowers on a Golden Cane Palm (C. lutescens).
This palm is much more robust and gains a bigger stature than the standard C. lutescens. Also, pure C. lutescens typically gets some yellowing during dry months and requires fertilizer to keep green and beautiful. The Golden Triangle Hybrid does not require fertilizer to keep nice green foliage. The cold tolerance and drought tolerance have not been extensively tested against the pure species so nothing can be said at this moment regarding that. The Golden Triangle hybrid is also sterile- meaning it does not produce viable seed- which can be of benefit in a landscaping application because it will not foster a colony of unwanted seedlings at the base of the tree which often have to be sprayed or removed.
Sun Requirements: Full sun, partial sun, or shade
Growth Rate: Very fast. At the nursery we can grow them from seed to 1-gallon in 10 months.
Fertilizer: Low
Cold Tolerance: USDA Zone 9b-11 (possibly Zone 9a once established and in a protected spot)
