Description: Our new and improved Butyagrus intergeneric hybrid is one of the most elegant palms for colder climates and unites the cold hardiness of Butia with the fast growth, elegance and large size of Syagrus, resulting in a plant vaguely reminiscent of a coconut palm. While this hybrid sometimes occurs naturally where the Butia and Syagrus grow together in southern Brazil and Uruguay, the seeds offered here are actually the result of carefull hand-pollination on Butia odorata with pollen of a particularly are fast growing and cold hardy variety of Syagrus romanzoffiana known as Syagrus romanzoffiana 'Litoralis' in the trade. The hand pollination process involves removing all male flowers from the inflorescence of the Butia to avoid self-pollination-a time-consuming and tedious process. These first generation hybrids germinate well and reliably produce vigorous and healthy palms. They are well suited to many temperate climates and can survive temperatures below -10°C (14°F).
