Description: This is a hybrid we began producing in 2025 and have distributed to our San Diego nursery for sale to the public. It is now available by mail-order for the US and Worldwide. By applying the donor pollen from a Teddy Bear Palm (Chrysalidocarpus leptocheilos- a palm native to rainforest in Madagascar) to the female flowers on a White Sand Palm (Chrysalidocarpus psammophilus also native to Madagascar over much of the island but usually found among coastal sand forests) the resulting hybrid seed grows to become a "Sandy Bear Palm". This combines the "Sand" from the mother with the "Bear" from the father. The mother palms have an especially purple crownshaft which is why they were selected for breeding. The percentage of viable hybrid seeds is relatively moderate- not too few, not too many, but growth is slow as seedlings although it seems to pick up substantially once the hybrids are about 1 foot tall.
Sun Requirements: Unknown. Probably half-day or filtered sun when young and more sun as it gets older.
Growth Rate: Moderate
Fertilizer: Moderate
Cold Tolerance: Unknown. Unknown; probably USDA Zone 9b
